The City of Greater Dandenong local food strategy and associated branding strategy is being developed to expand opportunity for food producers and retailers whilst also increasing the affordability and access to healthy food for the local community. When it is completed the strategy will guide future policy, helping the City of Greater Dandenong to anticipate opportunities and challenges, grow Dandenong’s food network, plan for action, and lead the way for a more secure food future.

Specifically the strategy will address:

  • Production – fresh food, meat and dairy, including potential opportunities for expansion of the sector with an emphasis on regional linkages and innovative small scale production
  • Land use – planning to balance housing and growing population pressures
  • Processing, and the supply chain of the local food processing sector, including:
    • Packaging and machinery & equipment manufacturing, including export expansion potential
    • Identification of current and future markets for the expansion of the local food sector
    • Transport and storage, including road and rail linkages and future transport planning
    • Retail – fresh food, groceries and dining offers/experiences, including branding of cultural food offers and the Dandenong Market
  • Disposal and re-use of food
  • Issues of food access and affordability
